In the 90s, numerous record companies issued either tribute albums or rarities collections of their veteran artists, and Todd Rundgren was the subject of the latter format with the 1998 Japanese import Somewhere/Anywhere: The Unreleased Tracks. At 23 tracks in length, it compiles unheard vintage live material (from the '70s), a demo or two, plus several humorous promo ads that he recorded for his landmark 1972 Something/Anything release. It explains in the liner notes that most of these selections were discovered from the vaults at Bearsville Recording Studios in '98 while Rundgren was producing the band Splender, and most longtime fans will be overjoyed about the discovery. Included are several serene tracks from a live radio broadcast in '71 ("Be Nice to Me," and gorgeous reading of "Ooh Baby Baby"), as well more rock-oriented material via Utopia -- raucous covers of the Move's "Do Ya," the Who's "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere," Question Mark & the Mysterians' "96 Tears," an alternate take of "It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference," plus such Rundgren standards as "Just One Victory" and "A Dream Goes on Forever." Although Rundgren says in the CD booklet that Somewhere/Anywhere is "the only rarities record you're going to get out of me," more similarly styled Japan-only comps soon followed (2001's Demos & Lost Albums, etc.). ~ Greg Prato
