Release Info

There are countless Bob Marley collections on the market, most of them, like this one, drawing from his pre-Island Jamaican releases. These are usually poorly annotated, tossed-together affairs of dubious legality, and since Marley often re-recorded songs at various stages of his and the Wailers' career, it can be nearly impossible to tell which versions you're getting without actually playing the disc. This two-CD set holds up pretty well, though, collecting the signature tracks Marley & the Wailers did with producer Lee "Scratch" Perry in 1970 and 1971, along with the proto-dub mixes Perry subsequently did of the backing tracks and then attributed to the Upsetters, plus several earlier sides Marley and the group recorded with producer Leslie Kong for his Beverly record label. The end result is a pretty good look at Marley & the Wailers as they were up-shifting into what would ultimately turn out to be their most creative period. ~ Steve Leggett
