Yahowa was one of the many names assumed by the charismatic spiritual leader Yod Baker, a follower of kundalini yoga master Yogi Bhajan who established The Source, a spiritual commune nestled deep in Laurel Canyon. Throughout the 1970s, Yahowa (also known as Ya Ho Wa and Father Yod) and The Source's more musically inclined members recorded nine now sought-after LPs of unstructured, wholly improvised psychedelic rock under a variety of names, including Yahowa 13, Father Yod, and the Spirit of `76.
In the wake of a resurgence of interest in Yahowa 13 among record collectors and psych-rock aficionados, Yahowa 13's core members guitarist Djinn Aquarian, drummer Octavious Aquarian, and bassist Sunflower Aquarian reunited to record 2008's SONIC PORTATION, an album of extended instrumental jams, featuring monolithic percussion and heavily distorted electric guitar that effectively recapture the atmosphere of Yahowa 13's `70s recordings.
