In the four years that this retrospective covers, Brand X managed to explore a lot of musical ground and enlist the services of several different members. What one recognizes first and foremost in this collection is that Brand X was a brave troop, often wandering off in directions that might have frightened other groups. Still, they always seemed to make some kind of sense out of it all. Whether it was the unmitigated gall of the outrageous "Nuclear Burn," the humorous funk of "Born Ugly," or the emotional heaviness of "Cambodia," each piece found its own direction.
Throughout the course of the group, guitarist John Goodsall, the only original member to last the four years of this collection, was joined by such stellar instrumentalists as bassist Percy Jones, keyboardists Robin Lumley and Peter Robinson, and drummers Phil Collins and Mike Clarke. Collins, the most well-known of the lot, showed some of the most dexterous drumming of his career, especially on the aforementioned "Nuclear Burn" and the adventurous "Disco Suicide." Other classic tracks that put the band through its paces include the Indian-influenced "Sun in the Night" and the jazzy "Dance of the Illegal Aliens."
