Although UFO were never a singles band per se (their specialty was their album-oriented, electrifying live act), it's surprising how well single selections from their '70s glory years hold up on their own, as evidenced by ESSENTIAL UFO. Unjustly, the band has often been thought of as nothing more than a vehicle for the six-string shredding of Michael Schenker, but this collection proves otherwise--UFO were a solid hard rock band.
Highlights include such fast paced rockers as "Lights Out," "Rock Bottom," "Let it Roll," and "Doctor Doctor" (future speed metallists of the '80s often cited UFO as a primary influence), as well as such melodic tunes as "Only You Can Rock Me" and "Too Hot to Handle." ESSENTIAL UFO is a great introduction to this often-overlooked band.
