ABANDON, the follow-up to PURPENDICULAR, marks guitarist Steve Morse's second appearance on a Deep Purple disc. Steve sounds more comfortable in the band, and continues to add his veteran touch in a powerful way. "Any Fule Kno That" is a funky little number, while "Almost Human" does indeed show Mr. Morse settling in and finding his groove with a rip-roaring solo. "Don't Make Me Happy" shows the boys taking a bluesy turn, while "Seventh Heaven" returns to the group's heavy, vintage style. "Fingers to the Bone" is a melodic number with an acoustic rhythm part. Jon Lord's fantastic keyboard solos accentuate tunes like "Jack Ruby" and "She Was," and his organ goes one-on-one with Morse's playing on "Evil Louie." "'69" is a jam that reminisces about the band's partying days in Britain. "Bludsucker" closes the album and features the unmistakable shrieking of lead throat Ian Gillan. Revitalized with the addition of Steve Morse, ABANDON makes it less and less difficult to grasp that Ritchie Blackmore is no longer in the group. The band is tight and heavy, and the record is definitely worth a spin.
