ANTHOLOGY: DOWN IN BIRDLAND chronicles the Manhattan Transfer's stunning career with Atlantic, 1975-1988. From the time they first met on October 1, 1972 the group felt a strong unity through their love for 4-part vocals.
They began by emulating the 4-part block harmony of the Count Basie Big Band saxophone section. From this foundation they experimented with other styles to create their unique blend of jazz and rock. Originality, combined with their tireless attention to detail, earned the Manhattan Transfer 8 group Grammys and a following as large as their harmonies are rich.
