Yes, this has been done before -- Erik Satie by a jazz group. But it's never been done in quite this way. For starters, bandleader Fritz Hartschuh is a vibes player, which is close enough to a piano, but in Peter Reiter there is also a pianist in the band, as well as bassist Vitold Rek and drummer Ralph-R H�bner. There is also a narrator (Peter Niermeyer) for certain pieces who reads a text written by the composer. As to why this disc is called das Erik Satie Projekt, it's because each of these works has been built for a chamber jazz group in the same way the Modern Jazz Quartet might build them out, though with a closer reliance on the original text than MJQ -- Hartschuh is talented, but he...
