A strong set reissued from LP, Rainsplash features the accomplished piano of Alan Simon, with tenor saxophonist Ralph Lalama on tenor, John Goldsby on bass, and Tim Pleasant on drums. Simon plays with assurance, his notes tinged with an impressionistic imprimatur. He is comfortable with a range of tempos, and his pleasant brand of relaxed swing delights as it edifies. His coupling of Debussy's "Reflet's Dans Leau" with Strayhorn's "Lush Life" is brilliant. Other pieces include two originals by Simon, and tunes by Herbie Hancock, Duke Ellington, and Wayne Shorter -- a generous program.
